Scene from tonight’s practice session for the #igdovetailchallenge
We’ll call this set number 3 ever, first full practice pair in 1/4” poplar.
Separately, the tails look pretty good, the pins look ok and then it goes down hill when they come together. My DIY jig isn’t exactly perfect so I’m hoping that’s what is throwing off my angles on the pins. You can see pretty clearly the sides of the center pin are not even and that translates to a gappy joint, which is frustrating because I was really careful with marking and sawing, so I’m not sure where I went wrong I xcept for the jig. My real Katz-Moses jig is on its way, so hopefully next week round 4 will look better. I need to practice on some chunkier wood too. The 1/4” is the scrap I’ve got, so that’s what I’m using, but I should be practicing on 1/2” which is what the project will be made from.
On the up side, the poplar was actually really nice to work with. Hard enough to catch the edge of my chisel and cut nice and clean, but soft enough to not be too frustrating. At this point, the chisels need a touch up, then it’ll be on to round 4.

Tree trunk number 2 complete. The trunk is what counts, all these little branch ends are just areas that will support the leaf layer above it. That layer will have some gaps cut in so you can see the branches beneath, but the cartoony V’s will all be hidden. Trust me, it makes sense in my head 😉

I’m never using minwax gel stain again. How many bad experiences does it take to learn a lesson? First picture is after the second coat, which should have made this maple cabinet door a solid dark red chestnut as advertised.
First pic is after the first coat, notice how it’s darker? All the second coat did was wipe off the first. Followed the directions to the letter and even used their recommended pre treatment product. This stuff is garbage. The only thing that is predictable about it is it’s inconsistency and inferior results. I don’t like to complain on social media, but buyer beware, this stuff is JawnShop REJECTED 👎🏻

I guess I neglected to post anything about it …

I guess I neglected to post anything about it in my feed, but this weekend in between the fridge cabinet build and getting some materials in order for the hand cut dovetail challenge, I also did a ton of prep work on the scrollsaw tree art project that I started forever ago.
I finally got some contact paper to try out @thehouseoftimber ‘s method for adhering paper templates. Previously, I just used a thin layer of spray adhesive directly on the wood, which didn’t always peel off clean and required razor scraping. Lizzy’s contact paper method works great and bonus: you get to do all those super satisfying contact paper peels! 😃
This is the first little tree that will be in the foreground and will have big leaf maple burl leaves.
To prep all my blanks, they were planed to 1/4”, bookmatched and glued, then sanded to 220. Then I add the contact paper, spray adhesive in the back of my paper template, slap it on and I’m good to scroll. Litzy has a story highlight if you want to see how a pro does it. I’m just a scrollsaw hack 😂
Now that the boring prep work is done, I hope to fit in a little scrolling here or there and make some good progress on this project. I have a story highlight so you can follow along too (I know it’s annoying when I’m jumping from project to project in every other post. Sorry not sorry, it’s how I get things done 🤪).

Kind of a slow day recovering from some deep southern NJ fun last night at the monster truck throwdown and BBQ feast. (#teamAvenger swipe to watch him win a heat)
Now I’m in the garage getting the first coat of stain on the fridge cabinet. After some testing that I won’t bore you with, I ended up using the minwax pre stain wood conditioner. It clogged the deep pores nicely on both the birch and maple and generally looked pretty even compared to untreated. Now I’m using a compatible minwax gel stain and ruining perfectly nice wood with an ugly color to match the office’s furniture selection. It’s going to need a few coats to get as dark as the sample swatch I’ve got. So far, so-ok.
Anyone have any tips on how to get stain as dark as the label indicates that it will stain wood? Add black dye or something? Ugh.

After prepping the wood for the hand cut dovetail challenge, I got back to the fridge cabinet. Final addition was a hidden finger groove in lieu of hardware on the front. Then I re sanded everything to 220 and softened the edges on the maple shaker door.
After all that, I did some pre treatment and stain testing, trying to get this birch to match the maple, and the maple to be as dark and as even as the sample of the existing furniture I’ve got. It’s looking close, but it needs to be darker. We’ll see what a second coat does tomorrow. .

Planning out my entry for the hand cut dovetail challenge. Check my stories for more details on what I’m doing. I’ll document everything in there.
This is cherry from my uncles house down the street, and some neighborhood spalted beech that was blown down in a storm. I plan to make a tall thin cabinet to hang on the wall with live edge cherry sides dovetailed together with this beech or something like it as the backing. If that goes ok, and if there is room, I’ll put in a very small shelf at the top with something like a sliding dovetail kind of dado. That is definitely a bit ambitious, but it’s not a challenge if you aren’t challenging yourself!😉

Im throwing my dirtiest hat into the ring for the @mf_woodbutcher and @bikecitywoodworks hand cut dovetail challenge. I’m going for “most improved” category.😂 The first and only completed dovetails I’ve ever cut were for a shop drawer under my workbench. They are pine, terribly ugly and uneven yet still functional.
Since I have had minimal practice and even less skill, I figured some sort of guide would be helpful if I’m going to be using nicer wood on an attempt at a traditional fine woodworking piece. So I spent a bit of time yesterday watching videos and came across @jkatzmoses demo on @makesomethingtv , which was great. But before dropping the cash, I wanted to try out his jig risk free. So I took a good look at the pictures and mocked up my own 8:1 jig out of some scrap maple (and no magnets). I practiced in pine, just to see if the thing worked, and it did! (You do still have to mark and label your pieces properly, you can see where I made pins out of tails the first time). Then I got it right the second time actually cutting tails properly.
After the successful angle test in pine, I moved up to some rough cut wormy cherry. Both saw and chisel function improved in the harder wood, but unfortunately the pin piece split as I was cleaning out the base. It’s still a little sloppy, but the angle guide jig thing seems to work great, I just need a lot more practice. Now that I know it works (for me) I’m confident to buy a real one. Or win one 😃
I’ll think up my own hashtag for the practice stuff so I can keep track of improvements as well as post a few action stories so you all know it’s legit. But let’s be honest, nobody would claim this quality of work to be machine made.
Since this is a no rush kind of work, I’ll be working on it periodically between the fridge cabinet and scrollsaw trees.
Should be fun! Who else is joining in?

It’s been a while so nice I’ve shown off the finished #hulkfistmallet … So here it is in a stupid boomerang thing.
It’s got a red oak core and handle sandwiched between fir 2×6’s. I used my own fist to draw a template, hulk sized it, then trimmed it down on the bandsaw and power carved using a router with a rasp bit and a 1/4” cove bit. Then came a ton of sanding both with power tools and by hand.
The green is a wood dye and the whitewash is diluted acrylic (I wanted the wood grain to show through). Everything is finished with several layers of wipe on poly.
If it’s not clear, the handle is supposed to represent hulk’s radius and ulna (forearm bones).
A ton of people were excited to follow along on this build and it was a lot of fun to interact, answer questions and take suggestions, many of which were incorporated into the build. Thanks for your interest in my work!
