It’s been sort of an off week in the shop. Did a lot of hustling to get ready for the farm market and some other orders that were in progress, but I’ve been feeling a bit worn out, so just working on a few odds and ends this week so I can start fresh on the next big set of orders.
I’ve been trying to finish off the latest batch of tie bars and cufflinks for Father’s Day, but this end grain bocote has been giving me issues. The finish (minwax wipe on poly, which I use all the time) wasn’t drying in. Worked great on everything else, as always, but stayed tacky on the bocote. So I’ve sanded it down a bit and switched to arm-r-seal for the finishing coats. Hopefully a different product composition works a little better with the wood. Any thoughts on what the issue may be? I didn’t have any issue with the necklaces and I haven’t found bocote to be too much different than some of the other exotics I’ve worked with (Purple Heart, canary wood, Jatoba). Kinda weird. Let me know if you’ve got a tried and true bocote finish!
In any case, once I’ve got it figured out, these will make a really nice “subtle wood fashion” set. It doesn’t scream “wooden dress wear” like the walnut or zebrawood, but once you get up close, it’s got tons of character. Kindof reminds me of someone I know 😉
