Sticking to the plan last night, I got through…

Sticking to the plan last night, I got through all of these boards for both rounds of 120 grit. Here I’ve raised the grain and I’m getting a sneak peak of what the boards will look like when finished. Today, I’ll do another round of 120 on all sides then probably do a chamfer on the edges before moving to 220.
The rack I’m using in the last picture is just a wire file rack from staples. Works perfectly for my usual batches of 8 and I use it for both drying after raising the grain and after oiling.

A little while ago Scott @cutthroat_woodworks …

A little while ago Scott @cutthroat_woodworks asked “what stage of batching projects do you struggle with most?” I said sanding and many would agree. It’s just not a glamorous part of the project. Not a ton of visual or tangible change and it takes a while to work through the grits, ensure complete coverage, raise the grain and do it over again.
Here’s a few tips I’ve picked up to make sanding less of a chore and a lot more efficient so I can get through it and on to a more fun step in the project:
1.1) buy yourself a powerful 6" ROS sander with variable speeds and sand patterns. I use the @boschtoolsna DEVS 1250. It’s a beast and cuts the sanding time in half* (*when combined with my other tips). Costs a lot for a sander but nowhere near a festool.
1.2) use premium abrasives and change them out when you need to. I’ve been using Mirka nets and @diablo_tools paper and been happy with both.
1.3) use a vacuum attachment on your sander. It’ll keep your abrasives working harder longer saving you time and money, not to mention keeping your workplace clean and your lungs healthy.
2) optimize your workspace. I’m using @kregjig inline clamps and bench dogs. they are great low profile clamps. Don’t get in the way of the sander and hold the workpiece firmly in place. Note the vacuum and cord control too. That’s just a bent piece of steel of a campaign sign from the last town mayoral election.
3) protect yourself. I wear an apron, eye protection, a 3m N95 mask, @isotunesaudio Hearing protection and @firm_grip_gloves Carpenter pro gloves. The cutout fingers and thumb are great since I don’t have to take them off to check progress by feel.
4) stick to the plan. Off the planer, I start with 120 on beast mode, work through both sides of each then do it again on regular mode. Change pads as necessary, for me it’s usually every 4 boards with 120. Spray with water and raise the grain and let dry if you’re using water based finish or its a food contact piece. 120 again on all sides, air compressor spray off any excess grit and move to 220 on all sides. Air compressor again and move to 320 if you like. I do for hardwoods as it leaves a buttery smooth surface.
